  • height overall 26 3/4 in.
  • 68cm
in George I form, the lower body chased with lobes against a matted ground, the applied mid-rim with shellwork and foliage, on a stepped domed base chased with leaf-tips and with leaf-capped double-scroll handles, the matching detachable plinth chased on one side with a two-masted ship

Condition

engraving probably removed from piece, but not thin or disturbed, a few very small dings, otherwise good, massive size and great quality

Catalogue Note

This cup is one of a set  of fourteen “Corsair Cups” given by the terms of J.P. Morgan’s will to the members of the Corsair Dining Club.  Made by Dominick and Haff in 1914 to a Georgian design proposed by member Frank Sturgis and valued at $1000 each, one is in the Morgan Library, another in the  New York Historical Society, see Margaret K. Hofer, Stories in Sterling, Four Centuries of Silver in New York, pp. 204-206
