Catalogue Note

Following the death of Edward C. Moore in 1891, John T. Curran assumed the position of head silver designer at Tiffany.  The "Saracenic" designs shown so successfully at the Paris Exposition of 1889 were expanded under Curran and culminated in the 1893 Chicago Exposition with his Magnolia Vase surrounded by other equally innovative pieces, many incorporating enamels, and some, as in this piece, ivory and/or exotic woods.  The interlaced strapwork decoration on these bellows is close to a partly enamelled loving cup designed by Curran for the 1893 Exposition, illustrated John Loring, Magnificent Tiffany Silver, 2001, p. 192 .
