Catalogue Note

Characterized by highly lustrous wool, stylized foliate and geometric designs executed in a wide variety of colors, this rug originates from the Sauj Bulagh area of Eastern Kurdistan, see James D. Burns, Antique Rugs of Kurdistan, London, 2002, pls. 47, 48, 49, pp. 156-161. The overall serrated palmettes in the rug here are most closely related to a rug sold in these rooms, December 14, 2006, lot 182.  These two rugs follow those Kurdish pieces having the flaming palmette designs, such as the ex-Meyer-Müller/Ronnie Newman rug, also sold here, December 2, 2003, lot 36; Burns, op.cit., pl. 47 and a rug formerly with an American collector, also sold Sotheby's New York, November 25, 2008, lot 99.
