oval, the cover mounted with a fine miniature of George Washington by Benjamin Trott after the Athenaeum Portrait by Gilbert Stuart, the box with engine-turned surface within borders of vari-colored gold with oak leaves and acorns and entrelac, the sides with draped pilasters, the base chased with a band of running husks
Provenance
According to family history this box descends from John Langdon Sullivan (1777-1865) through his first marriage to Elizabeth Russell (1779-1854), daughter of Thomas Russell (1740-1796), Boston attorney. John's father, James Sullivan (1744-1808) served as governor of Massachusetts from 1807-08.
