Saddleback Mountain is known today as Mount Greylock, the highest natural point in Massachusetts.  The mountain has been the inspiration for many American writers of the 19th century, including Henry David Thoreau, who wrote "Saddle-back Mountain Experience"  one of the most important works of the American Transcendental Movement (1849).
