Catalogue Note

Painted in 1947, Alice in Wonderland was the first in a series of illustrations of childrens' literary classics that Houghtelling created for Collier's magazine.  The present image appeared across pages 64 and 65 in the magazine's April 9, 1949 issue.  His intention in creating these comprehensive illustrations, or "art-told tales" in his own words, was to inspire children to read and enjoy these wonderful books.  His renderings of Treasure Island and The Life of Christ appeared in later editions of the magazine.   The present work presents Alice in Wonderland in its entirety and should be read starting at the upper left and continuing counter-clockwise.

We thank Mrs. Lydia Houghtelling for her help with the cataloguing of this lot.
