Catalogue Note

Lauded as America's foremost neoclassical sculptor of the 19th century, Hiram Powers achieved extraordinary public success during his lifetime. In addition to 14 full-length statues and 14 ideal busts that brought him international celebrity, Powers modeled some 200 portrait busts of America's political and social luminaries. The artist began modeling George Washington around 1838, producing various marble examples from 1844 until his death in 1873.
