Condition

The following condition report has been prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation: This painting on canvas board has not been restored and would certainly respond to cleaning and restoration. The artist painted rapidly in some areas and some of his thinnest washes have developed slight instability. It seems that some of the pigment has evaporated or has become very thin over time and this can be seen in areas such as around the nearest horse in the lower right, in some of the details in the crowd and in the architecture at the top of the picture. While it is possible that actual paint loss has occurred, it is just as likely that the washes have weakened to the point that they no longer hold their color. In any advent, the painting is otherwise in beautiful state. If it is cleaned and lightly glazed in some of these areas that presently lack pigment, the work would be seen to be in very good state.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
