Catalogue Note

Village ceremonies were important annual activities, bringing together the community for harvest festivals or ancestor celebrations. The platform groups form "...a visual text presenting an inventory of basic religious, social and economic activities and the settings in which they took place". These sculptures can be linked to the archaeological finds of circular ritual spaces in areas of Colima and Nayarit; see Townsend in Townsend, ed. (1998:108-109, and pgs. 109 and 133) for examples of platform groups.
