Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There is a very small paint loss to each of the top corners. Close inspection reveals a few small and stable networks of thin craquelure scattered, one of which has a pin-sized paint loss associated to it to the bottom centre of the composition. No restoration is visible under ultraviolet light.

Catalogue Note

“Afro’s personal philosophy toward his painting differs from the American abstractionists in that his images are a result of his desire to build an ordered pictorial form without there being the insistence on two-dimensionality that is so important to many abstract painters.”

(C. Burnett quoted in: Exhibition Catalogue, Catania, Monastero dei Benedettini, Afro: la Natura del presente – opera dal 1936 al 1975, 1992, p. 26)
