Catalogue Note

The present lot has previously been attributed to Pietro Chiesa, the artistic director of the Fontana Arte firm from 1932 to 1948.  Alongside Luigi Fontana, Chiesa introduced many iconic designs and significantly elevated the recognition of the firm.  In 1954, following the passing of Chiesa six years prior, the artistic director position was assumed by Max Ingrand.  Already well known for his stained windows designed for Nôtre Dame du Pré cathedral in Le Mans, Ingrand introduced a distinct design vision to the firm.  The present table lamp model, first published in Domus in 1955, makes stylistic reference to both the historic design of Chiesa, as well as the firm’s new aesthetic under Ingrand’s direction.

Sotheby’s would like to thank the Chiesa family and Laura Falconi for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.
