Provenance

Condition
Overall in very good original condition. This piece was executed for the Kölnischer Kunstverein and for their specific use as a book table in the entrance area. The table with minor surface scratches, a few scattered edge nicks and some light rubbing, consistent with gentle use. There are two minor losses to the veneer measuring approximately ½ x ½ inch. They are presently darker in color, likely from surface dirt. With some minor discoloration to the lower portion of the foot which is consistent with age and use. This table is executed in birch, which when viewed in person displays nice coloration throughout. There is no hardware required to install this piece, and each of the elements are either slotted or pegged. These pieces are very sculptural in design and yet designed to be functional. A rare commission work executed during Judd's lifetime to appear on the auction market.

Catalogue Note
The Kölnischer Kunstverein, founded in 1839, is one of the oldest arts associations in Germany. As early as 1919 when it presented the work of little known artist Hans Arp, Kölnischer Kunstverein began its mission to bring internationally renowned contemporary art exhibitions to Cologne and to provide financial support for local artists. The two lots on offer were commissioned directly from Donald Judd for the entrance to the building. Each of the tables were made expressly for and to specifications outlined by then director of the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Marianne Stockebrand, who would later serve as the director of Judd’s Chinati Foundation from 1994-2010. These tables are rare site-specific designs executed during the artist’s lifetime.
