Description

  • Russel Wright
  • An Extremely Rare Table Lamp
  • glazed earthenware, oak, aluminum and paper shade

Condition

Overall in very good condition. Original finial, harp switch and spun-aluminum socket. Modern wire, plug and paper shade. The ceramic lamp body is in excellent condition. The surface irregularities and burst air bubbles of the glaze are inherent in the making. The wood base with some dryness and two visible vertical seams. When viewed in person, the glaze of this lamp has a subtle color and textural variation which is not fully visible in the catalogue photograph. This rare lamp is an exciting example of Russel Wright's work in its combination of the materials and organic forms for which he is most well-known.

Catalogue Note

The present lot is a rare example of Russel Wright's early lamp designs for Bauer Pottery, which predate his work for the Colonial Premier Lamp Company by almost a decade.  Ann Kerr explains in the Collector's Encyclopedia of Russel Wright that Wright produced two lamp designs for Bauer that were exhibited in Atlanta in 1941, but subsequently discontinued due to the lack of orders.  In reference to these undocumented designs she writes that "a finding would be a significant one."
