Condition
Overall in very good original condition. The exterior of the solid pewter body presents with shallow surface scratches, nicks and some light rubbing. The interior shows signs of age and use with some discoloration and surface dirt. The enamel cabochons are original, and exhibit only light craquelure consistent with the material and inherent in the making.
It is important to note that this piece has never been polished, a rarity for Knox "Tudric" pieces that is valued by experts in this field. Sotheby's has consulted Don Menveg, conservator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in regard to the treatment of Archibald Knox pewter produced for Liberty & Co. His opinion follows here:
"This piece should never be polished. The polished surface would only last a short time and then re-oxidize. The polishing, even done carefully, may leave behind residue which could become unsightly in time. In the past some institutions have polished then clear coated, which can last about five years and the has to be removed, cleaned and re-coated. I would leave it alone unless there is a severe problem. Pewter can crystalize at low temperatures and if that is a problem, I would then recommend a light non- abrasive cleaning."
