Condition

Overall very good original condition. The wood used to the execute the free-form top of this sideboard was selected to match the dining suite offered in the following two lots. The sideboard top was altered in the original design drawing, to increase the overhang, likely at the request of the commissioning family. The laurel top with some minor surface scratches and retains a deep and rich tone. The laurel is highly figured and has a slightly textured front edge, giving the piece an even greater depth. The pandanus cloth is original. The piece has been gentle cleaned and waxed over the years, and shows signs only very gentle use. Two of the interior compartments are fitted with two shelves and the third is fitted with drawers. The Persian walnut wood selected to executed the drawer fronts in this example are quite extraordinary with heavily colored figuring. The interior drawer fronts and the detailed laurel are elegant details incorporated in this particular stunning example of the form.

Catalogue Note

The following six lots represent a private collection of works commissioned from George Nakashima by a New Jersey family in 1964.  The drawings executed by Nakashima demonstrates significant collaboration between the family and the artist.  This collection displays a number of rare variant woods, including richly figured and saturated laurel selected for the dining suite and companion sideboard.

This lot is being sold with a copy of the original design drawing by George Nakashima.
