    base impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/677
  • favrile glass and patinated bronze

Condition

Overall in good condition. The favrile glass shade is in very good condition, showing a strong range of color and luminosity to the iridized exterior surface. The top aperture rim of the shade with several small edge chips and flecks (which are not visible when the shade is installed in the base), and with some subtle abrasion marks just below the top aperture rim where the shade comes in contact with the base mount. The shade with a few small air bubble inclusions inherent in the making, as well as one small area of surface residue to the exterior (1/4 inch, possibly a paint or wax drip). The patinated bronze surfaces of the base with surface scratches, abrasions and rubbing to the patina consistent with age and use. On the top and perimeter surfaces of the lower base unit, the top layer of green patina shows flaking and scattered losses throughout, revealing a dark russet brown patina below. The ribbed bronze knobs which secure the adjustable shade arm are presently frozen and do not rotate. The shade arm still pivots freely, but when the shade is presently installed the weight of the shade forces the arm to its lowest position. We would recommend that the base be restored so that the knobs and shade arm adjust properly. The socket and paddle switch appear to be original and undisturbed, both showing considerable surface wear from age and use. The bronze ring mount which secures the shade with minor irregular bending. Please note that the catalogue photograph shows the shade illuminated with remitted light—when the shade is seen un-illuminated with reflected light the iridized surfaces show a superb range of striking colors.
