Catalogue Note
Li Kai first painted The Forbidden City when he was a student in the Affiliated Senior High School of China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He then moved to the countryside to avoid the country's political chaos. When he moved back to Beijing, he worked in the palace for twelve years and started to create works depicting its beauty. In this painting, the artist paints a dawn view of Taihe Hall. Compared to the hustle and bustle during the day time, the palace seems tranquil and heavenly, while the moss and lichen in the foreground are witnessing the vicissitudes of this ancient city.
