Catalogue Note

Painted in 1894, at the height of Mesdag's career, the present work features one of the artist's favorite subjects: bomschuiten on the beach with fisherfolk unloading the catch. As Scheveningen did not have a harbor, the flat bottomed fishing boats were dragged to and from the sea by horses or manpower. The small figures and majestic ships, bathed in sunlight and mirrored in the water of the shore create a luminous composition that is among Mesdag's best.

This composition is related to a larger work of the same name, sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, October 16, 2007, lot 253.
