Catalogue Note

The French-born painter Sophie Anderson is predominantly associated with genre paintings and Victorian child portraiture, her most celebrated picture being No Walk Today (sold, Sotheby's, London, November 19, 2008, lot 96, illustrated). Quintessential of Anderson's subject matter is the focus on the innocence of childhood, emphasised here by the young girl's positioning in a verdant meadow and surrounded by field-flowers. There is a common link throughout many of Anderson's paintings, the connection between childhood and nature.
