Catalogue Note

Painted after Courbet's exile in Switzerland, the foreground of the present work is painted with the artist's characteristic technique and the signature is autograph. The precise, meticulous details of the footbridge and surrounding rocks as well as the construction of the waterfall suggest the hand of a studio member.
