Catalogue Note
Waagen was a sculptor of German-Baltic descent who settled permanently in Paris and exhibited at the Salon between 1861 and 1887. The Kabyle au Retour de la Chasse is one of the most successful examples of his work in the Orientalist style. Another cast of this model is in the collection of the Dahesh Museum, New York.
This model was produced in several sizes; the present lot is an example of what is believed to be the largest. A similar cast was sold at Sotheby's New York, October 21, 2008, lot 99 for $37,500.
