Condition
Overall in good condition. Visible seams to the snake and Hercules' right arm with slight related movement. Wear and traces of green to the patina throughout from an unknown source, probably oxidation that is showing through the brown patina.

Catalogue Note
This bronze depicts the twelfth labor of Hercules assigned by King Eurystheus in which he captured Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guarded the underworld. Other examples of this sculptural group are known to be inscribed with a verse from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Rancoulet was born in Bordeaux and participated at the Salon for a number of years beginning in 1870. He is known for works cast in bronze in rather limited editions.
