Catalogue Note

Following the closure of the Beurdeley workshop in 1895, two auctions of its contents took place March 6-8 and May 27-28.  It is now recorded that Paul Sormani, Henry Vian and Maison Boudet among others purchased bronze master models and thus continued the production of the celebrated eighteenth-century models using Beurdeley’s skillfully rendered molds.  This usage explains the presence of the BY mark and serial number on the present clock.  Sormani exhibited this clock model in 1899 Exposition Franco-Russe de St-Pertersburg, the last international exhibition of the nineteenth century at which Maison Boudet also exhibited.
