Catalogue Note

Discovered on January 15, 1506, the Laocoön group soon eclipsed even the Apollo Belvedere in fame and for several centuries the two were ranked together as the pre-eminent works of antiquity.

The Naples foundry of Sabatino de Angelis et Fils was active in the late 19th and early 20th century and renowned for casting replicas of the famous antiquities in the Museo Nazionale di Napoli. The bronzes were cast using the lost wax method and were given a variety of patinas to imitate the antique.
