Description

  • Vellum
two leaves and a bifolium, each 150mm. by 110mm., the two single leaves each with a three-quarter page miniature by a skilled follower of the Maître François (cf. Avril and Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures, 1993, no.14), within architectural columns in gold (one with two bearded prophets picked out at the head of the columns) enclosing (a) Pentecost, with the Virgin kneeling before a sumptuous burgundy cloth embroidered with liquid gold flowers, with the apostles, as the Dove descends, and (b) the Crucifixion, with Mary Magdalene clinging to the base of the Cross, as Roman soldiers (one with a pennant with the German imperial double-headed eagle) look on, both above 3-line initials in white-scrolls with full borders of acanthus-leaf sprays and a realistic dragon-fly and stoat-like animal on shapes of white vellum or dull-gold; the bifolium with a small miniature, 39mm. by 35mm., of the Meeting at the Golden Gate, with a three-quarter border as above with a bird and a four-legged drollery creature, 19 lines, small initials and linefillers in liquid gold on blue or brick-red, with a decorated border panel accompanying each text page, excellent condition
