Catalogue Note

The first modern account of Hagia Sophia. Fossati (1809-1883) came to Constantinople in 1837 as Russian Court Architect. Initially engaged on the construction of the Russian embassy, he entered the service of the Sultan in 1845. In 1847 he undertook the restoration of Hagia Sophia: a two year project of structural alterations and uncovering of mosaics. Plates 20-23 form a panorama of Constantinople taken from one of the minarets.
