Catalogue Note

Rare. Several of the charts in this atlas were printed from the plates originally issued by Willem Barentsz in 1595 in his rare Caertboeck vande Middelandtsche Zee and which Janssonius had reprinted without changes in 1626.

For this atlas ten charts were printed from existing plates, including the general chart Tabula partis Australis Europae. These plates were altered by cutting fresh title cartouches, inserting plate numbers, and removing sailing vessels and some of the compass roses.

Of the remaining charts and maps the most important is that of the eastern Mediterranean (Paskaarte van't oostelijscke deel vande Midde-landsche Zee). This rare chart, engraved by Abraham Goos, appears only in in the present work.
