Catalogue Note

A rare book which for a long time was believed not to have been printed.

Acevedo was sent as Visitador to Brazil, arriving in Bahia in 1566, and travelled the country for two years in order to acquire first-hand experience of the work of the missionaries and to find locations for new missions. After time in Europe he returned in 1570 with a group of 39 young Spanish and Portuguese missionaries but their ship was attacked by the Calvinist pirate Jacques Sorie de la Rochelle and all were massacred. They were beatified by Pius IX in 1854.
