Catalogue Note

Rare photographic views of the port of Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, mostly showing the city's architecture and street views. Founded in 1726, by 1875 the city already had a population of 110,000 and had become one of finest urban and commercial centres of South America. The introduction, dated January 1875, suggests that this officially-sponsored volume is the first attempt to produce a photographic album of Montevideo, which is considered long overdue. The title is taken from the upper cover.
