Catalogue Note

"This extremely rare map is the first to depict Hudson's Bay" (Burden).

A landmark in the European exploration of Arctic Canada, Hudson's printed map was prepared to illustrate his published narrative Beschryvinghe van der Samoyeden Landt in Tatarien, an account of the discoveries made in his voyage in search of a north-west passage, culminating in the discovery of Hudson's Bay. The map is in its first state, with the two lines of text engraved along the 360 degree meridian.

At the time, Hudson was working in the Dutch service, hence the publication of this extremely important and influential map in Amsterdam, which inspired a new generation of explorers and adventurers.
