Catalogue Note

An uncommon plate,  and a posthumous commemoration of Pope Pius V. The text in the lower panel gives the length of his papacy as six years, three months, twenty four days (he died on 1 May 1572) and associates him with the crushing victory of the Christian League assembled by Pius over the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto.

The print is attributed to the Flemish print-maker and publisher Nicolas van Aelst (c.1527-1613) who was active in Rome c.1570-1596.
