Catalogue Note
A rare single sheet from a late eighteenth-century Danish wall map of the world by this little-known mathematician and cartographer. The map appears to be a composite representation of the numerous maps issued in a later atlas, published under the same title by Peter Steinmann in 1790.
The complete four-sheet map is known only in two examples: the Royal Library of Copenhagen and the Library of the Maritime Section of the French Ministry of Defence in Vincennes. It features a central circular polar projection surrounded by panels of descriptive text covering the world and continents with a band of smaller maps, coats of arms and other embellishments.
This upper-right-hand sheet has a section of the polar projection, smaller maps covering south east Asia and the Far East, maps of Greece and the Balkans, India to China, Africa and the north-eastern seaboard of America.
