Catalogue Note

A rare plan of Laldhang, made in the aftermath of the first Rohilla War (1773-1774). This was a British-backed campaign by the wazir of Oudh to drive out the Rohillas, Afghan highlanders who had settled in Rohilkhand, northern India. The offensive received support from East India Company troops at the behest of Warren Hastings, the governor general of Bengal, who was keen to form an alliance with the wazir. This action formed one of the central planks of Edmund Burke's subsequent impeachment of Hastings.
