Catalogue Note

The USS Mohican was a steam sloop of war, assigned to the Pacific Squadron. She departed San Francisco in March 1886 for a nine year voyage which included Mexico, South America, Easter Island, New Zealand, Australia and Auckland. The photographs were mostly taken by Surgeon H.P. Harvey and Assistant Surgeon H.W. Whitaker; some of the subjects are identified in The Old Navy by Capt. J.K. Taussig (United States Naval Institute proceedings, vol.47, no.1 January 1921).
