The map in this work is an extensively revised and enlarged third state of Lewis Evans' seminal "A General Map of the Middle British Colonies, in America", here entitled "A Map of the Middle British Colonies in North America, first published by Mr. Lewis Evans, of Philadelphia in 1755...", the most important map of the region from the Colonial period, and one of the great surveys of any of the British possessions.
Pownall, one time governor of the Massachusetts Colony, was a recognised authority on the geography of North America.
