Catalogue Note

One of the most important sources of information on the history and topography of Madinah, with details of its buildings, graves, shrines, festivals and rituals. Al-Samhudi (1440-1506), the son of lawyer, was born in Samhud, a village in Upper Egypt; after his education in Cairo he went to the Hijaz where he continued his studies in Makkah and Madinah, spending the majority of his life in the study of Madinah. He gathered every written source he could find relating to the city and attempted to locate and describe every archaeological site in a way never attempted before.
