Catalogue Note

Abdul Ghaffar was an Indian medical doctor in Makkah and one of the earliest photographers in the city. He was taught photography by the Dutch scholar Christian Snouck Hurgronje who travelled to Makkah and converted to Islam, changing his name confusingly to Abdul Ghaffar, possibly as tribute to or to assume the credit for Ghaffar's photographs.
