Condition

Overall in very good condition. This lamp has documented provenance going back to the period, and by all accounts the shade and base have originated together as a unit. With approximately 30 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, which is a reasonable number in proportion to the vast number of glass tiles which were required to execute this complex and monumental shade. The shade leading had experienced a few very small and minor areas of separation, which was recently stabilized by a professional Tiffany conservator. The shade with surface soiling throughout, most notably adjacent to the shade leading in the upper registers of the shade, which presumably collected more dust over the years. The Tree Trunk base is in excellent condition, displaying an exceptionally rich green and russet brown patina. The patinated bronze surfaces of the base with some occasional surface scratches, rubbing, and a few small traces of a dark surface residue consistent with age and use. The surfaces on the base shaft are slightly dull, presumably from hand contact over the years. The bronze base switch, sockets and paddle switches all appear original and undisturbed. With a replaced finial, with a few minor shallow surface indentations. This lamp presents beautifully in person, displaying great scale and visual presence. The glass selection shows far greater nuance, vibrancy and luminosity than seen in the catalogue illustrations, especially to the translucent glass used in select leaves and to all of the flower centers throughout the shade. This lamp is one of less than four examples presently known of this exceedingly rare and dynamic model.
