  • Three Rare Moorish Sconces
  • MARKS
  • favrile glass and patinated bronze

en suite with the following lot

Provenance

Private Collection, Rochester, NY, circa 1905
Thence by descent

Condition

Overall in very good condition. These sconces were recently removed from their origjnal residence in Rochester, NY, and by all accounts originated together from the same interior. (These sconces were en suite with the Moorish chandelier offered in lot 232 of this sale.) The three favrile glass shades are all in very good condition, and represent a very harmonious set which are consistent in form, color and iridescence. As expected the top apertures of the shades with a few occasional small and minor edge chips and flecks (which are not at all visible when the shades are installed). The bronze mounts are all in very good condition, with all elements intact. The patinated bronze surfaces with some gentle surface wear and rubbing consistent with age and gentle use. When these sconces were removed from their original interior, it was discovered that two were fitted for electricity, and one was originally fitted for gas. The design of the latter fitted for gas was distinguished by having a loop-form valve on the arm supporting the shade socket, and was not originally designed with a wall plate. This sconce has since been adapted to electricity, and is now accompanied by a period Tiffany wall plate with an integral light switch to make its presentation more consistent with the other two sconces. All three of the sconces retain their original sockets, and the two sconces originally fitted for electricity retain their original bronze switches. With a few minute paint specks on the wall plates. An exceedingly rare set of early Moorish sconces that are highly visual and display beautifully in person.
