Catalogue Note

This work is the oil on paper rendition of a namesake oil on canvas diptych executed by the artist.  Gift is based on a historical photo taken during the Sino-Japanese War.   A Japanese fighter jet has been shot down and the Chinese people, exhilarated, are transporting the wreckage to the city center of Chongqing.  Li Songsong's paintings, best known for his thick impasto brushwork, are reinterpretations of images of history and in the process of re-presenting these moments, the artist challenges their accuracy.
