Catalogue Note

This work is the watercolour sketch associated with a namesake large-scale installation by the artist.  In 1999, Huang Yong Ping was invited to represent France at the 48th edition of the Venice Biennale and his installation One Man Nine Animals was exhibited at the French Pavilion. The installation comprises of nine wooden pillars that are scattered across the pavilion.  Atop each pillar is one of nine animals taken from the Chinese text "Classic of Mountains and Seas."
