Folio (14 1/4 x 10 1/2 in.; 362 x 268 mm). 14 etched plates after paintings by Empson, 1 engraved plate printed in brown by and after G.B. Sowerby, all hand-colored with tissue guards; text leaves with some marginal spotting, some marginal soiling on plates. Modern three-quarter red morocco gilt, top edge gilt, in a red cloth slipcase.

Catalogue Note

The rare large paper copy of the first edition, with hand-colored plates, not seen by Abbey. Empson spent three years in the Americas travelling and working with the engineer Robert Stephenson. The text consists of twelve narratives providing a series of informative vignettes of South American life. This issue does not include the first Coleopotera plate found in the 8vo issue.
