Catalogue Note
Large paper format. Seth Eastman (1808-1875) studied art while at West Point, serving as a mapmaker and illustrator during two tours of duty at Fort Snelling in the Minnesota Territory (the latter as commanding officer of the fort). He is famous for his illustrations published in the six-volume study by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, Information Respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes (1853), and in the publication by his wife Mary Eastman, American Aboriginal Portfolio (1853), from both of which the present collection is extracted.
