Text printed in English and Latin on vellum, 43 woodcuts (one signed AM on the block) and two decorative initials on pp. 74-75 by Aristide Maillol, other decorative initials designed by Eric Gill; approximately 18 pages discolored. Full limp vellum with green ties. Together with: 3 suites of the woodcuts printed on Imperial Japanese paper, one on extra thick Japanese paper, and one on yellow Chinese paper, contained with printed wrapper. And with: a second Artist's Proof printed on chine, signed on the block as well as by Maillol in pencil and blind-stamped H. Petiet | Editeur | Paris. And with: A proof on paper of p. 12, containing 2 ink drawings, 2 drawings in purple crayon, 2 doodles. The book and the three suites contained with an orange cloth folding case.

Catalogue Note

One of six copies of the English edition printed on vellum, marked A to F, of which only five are for sale, this being copy C, of a total edition of 264 copies. The vellum edition is also accompanied by three suites of the woodblocks printed on Imperial Japanese paper, extra-thick japanese paper, and yellow Chinese paper. In addition there is an artist's proof printed on chine, signed in the block and annotated "Essai no. 2" and signed "M" by Maillol in pencil. There is also a proof of page 12 that contains several doodles and four sketches by Maillol  (two in purple crayon and two in ink, one of which was included in the final edition).
