Catalogue Note

First edition. Many of the sketches were studies for oil paintings which were never accomplished as Wilkie died and was buried at sea on his return journey from the East in 1841. According to the introductory text leaf the original sketches "whence the present work is derived, realized a sum of not less than fourteen thousand pounds."
