Catalogue Note
Copy 1, exemplaire de tête. One of 4 copies on japon impérial with an original drawing by Marcoussis, a set of proofs before letters and a set of proofs from the cancelled plates. The whole edition comprises 100 copies.
This exemplaire de tête is from the collection of the German bibliophile Heinrich Stinnes (1867–1932). The original, which is a study for the frontispiece, is signed by Marcoussis in the upper right corner. Beneath the image, it is inscribed by Marcoussis, "pour l'exemplaire de Monsieur Heini Stinnes. L. M. 24.2.28".
"The illustrations which Marcoussis provided for the poems of his friend Tzara were done in 1927, and they show a Cubist approach independent from the Surrealist art [then] prevalent in Paris" (Manet to Hockney).
