Catalogue Note

Jacob Suter (1793-1874) was a Swiss artist whose forte  was in watercolor portraits, costumes, and landscapes. The present album comprises half-length portraits of young Italian women in native costume with the background depicting the landscape of the region whence they came: Sorennto, Castellamare, Sarno, Procita, Nola, Tochia, Casoria, Salerno, Vomero and Naples, Ottajano, Pomigliano, and Abruzzo. The watercolors are noteworthy for the exquisite delicacy of the drawing and extraordinarily vivid coloring.
