Catalogue Note

A superb set of hand-colored aquatint costume etchings, all in proofs before the letter, of which seven are unrecorded.

These are illustrations for the two-volume folio Peuples de Russie by Count Charles de Rechberg (see Lot 274) as published by Colas in Paris, 1812-1813. The etcher is Jegor Skotnikoff (1782–1843), working after the designs of Matvei Ivanovich Korneyev (1774–c. 1825). The plates present here which did not appear in the published work and are not listed by Rovinski (1895), are the final seven: Femme Turcque, Un Albénien, Un Albanois, Capitaine des Janissaires, Janissaire, Janissaire en habits de Cérémonie, Officier des Janissaires.
