4to (9 3/8 x 7 in.; 238 x 178 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Tennyson, engraved throughout on the rectos of thin cardstock, text illustrations all hand-colored. Later red morocco, on the upper cover a large central arabesque with five sheaves of wheat inlaid of brown leather, leafy branches of inlaid green leather, and three poinsettas of inlaid red leather, all these "in relief," on a densely pebbled gold ground, surrounded by elaborately tooled frame and border with black inlaid strapwork, the lower cover of similar design except not in relief, turn-ins gilt-tooled with inlaid green clover, olive watered-silk doublures and endleaves, edges gilt, signed in gilt "Rivière & Son," the original green pebbled cloth gilt binding bound in at the end, in a black straight-grain morocco folding box with double-fillet border, clasps and catches.
