Catalogue Note

Copy 4 of ten copies on japon ancien (of a whole edition of 110), signed by Gris.

The Cubist painter Juan Gris "repeated Radiguet's image of Venus rising from the sea for the cover lithograph, but drew four still-life lithographs in his late Cubist style to embellish the interior of the book" (Stein, p. 66).  Denise is one of five books Gris illustrated for his dealer, Kahnweiler.
